Meet the Idaho River Journeys Crew
Left to right is Skip Volpert, Will Volpert, Mary Papale, Tom Tremain, Rachael Herskowitz, Jo Schroeder, Michael O'Malley, Scooter Carling, Bob Volpert, John Slavin and Matt Volpert.
Our crew is outstanding. They come from varied backgrounds, have worked together for a number of years and enjoy sharing their knowledge of the canyon with guests. They'll show you their favorite sites along the way, hike with you to magnificent vistas, help you with your fly casting, introduce you to kayaking and make you feel welcome visiting this remarkable wilderness. You will enjoy spending your vacation with them.
Will is a Southern Oregon University graduate. He is an avid fly fisherman. He recently started his own rafting business in Ashland, Oregon. |
Jo is a Colby grad and earned an MBA from the Acton School of Business in Austin, Texas. Jo grew up in Salmon and joined our crew while still in high school |
Scooter lives in Ketchum and in the winter can be found at PK's Ski & Sports. He is a skilled fishing guide and works most of our Middle Fork trips. |
Tom has been guiding for more than 30 seasons. He is a nurse and lives in Salmon, Idaho. He has boated, fished and hiked every part of the Middle Fork. |
Matt is a UC Santa Barbara graduate. He is part of the management team at a private golf course near Palm Springs, California. |
Part-time crew members Brian and Jenni Chaffin. Brian is a grad student at Oregon State and Jenni works for NRS from their home in Corvallis. |
Skip 21, is a senior at the University of Oregon majoring in history. He was a swamper on our crew for 6 years before getting his guide license. |
Dr. Matt Schreiber is the Wilderness Medicine Fellow at Stanford University Medical Center. He guides a couple of Idaho trips every year. |
When not rafting, Erin can be found in a classroom teaching U.S. history, fishing northwest rivers or sea kayaking. |
This will be Rachael's fourth season on our crew. She is pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Montana. |
Phil is in his 22nd year of teaching 8th grade English and U.S. history in Susanville, CA. He guides on the Middle Fork, Main Salmon & Rogue. |
John lives in Boise and recently launched PRIVLO, a web-based marketplace for private real estate loans. He grew up in Salmon. |
Michael O'Malley works for the State of Utah in technology-based economic development. In the winter he is a mountain host at Deer Valley. |
Mary is the glue that holds our operation together. She handles reservations and plans our menus. She is Will, Matt and Skip's mom.

When it comes right down to it, the element that distinquishes one outfit from another is their crew. Most outfitters serve decent food and have good equipment. What they don't have is a crew that has worked together for years and knows these canyons like the guides who work for us. A good question to ask when choosing an outfiter is this. "How long has your crew worked together?"
