Middle Fork Trip Planning

Below is the essential information you need to plan your Middle Fork trip. In preparing for your trip, it is helpful to print out a copy of our Check List and Trip Details. If you are joining us on August 17, 25, September 2, 10 or 18, please go to that page for pre-trip meeting and other information.

Trip Meeting Location

Middle Fork trips launching in June, July, and August 1 & 9 meet in Stanley, Idaho. Our pre-trip orientation is held at the Mountain Village Lodge at 7:30 the evening before departure. For reservations at the Mountain Village Lodge, call 1-800-843-5475.

Getting to Boise and Stanley

Many of our guests fly to Boise and use an air charter service or ground transportation for the trip to Stanley. Our Boise to Stanley page offers travels suggestions. Airlines serving Boise include Delta, Alaska, Southwest, Northwest and United.

Flights from Boise to Stanley can be arranged with Salmon Air Taxi, 1-800-448-3413. The Mountain Village Lodge provides a free shuttle from the lodge airport for guests staying with them.

Driving and Ground Transportation Information

The drive from Boise to Stanley takes about 3 hours. At the end of the trip, we shuttle everyone back to Stanley by bus, arriving around 6 pm. You can park your vehicle in the Mountain Village Lodge lot while you are on the river. Caldwell Transportaton offers ground transportation by van or bus to and from Stanley from Boise. Arrangements must be made in advance.

Car Rental Information

Depending on the number in your party, it is often economical to rent a car for a week and leave it in Stanley while you are on the river. We return guests to Stanley by bus at the end of our trip. If you plan to have the car shuttled or returned to the agency while you are on the river, please contact River Shuttles at 1-800-831-8942 to discuss your options.

What to Bring

We provide just about everything you'll need, including freshly laundered sleeping bags and, spacious, clean tents.

  • Sun Screen and lip protection
  • Sunglasses with strap
  • Shirts for camp and to wear on-river
  • 2 pair of quick drying shorts or bathing suits
  • Baseball type cap
  • 1 pair of pants for camp
  • 2 pair of shoes for camp and boating (river sandals)
  • 2 pairs of wool socks
  • Fleece jacket or wool sweater
  • Warm jacket
  • Polypropylene underwear, top and bottom
  • Rain gear (good quality)
  • Towel
  • Toiletries
  • Personal medications
  • Water bottle with loop for attaching
  • Flashlight
  • Camera
  • Large Ziplock bags (for wet items & personal hygiene)

Optional items might include a paperback book, binoculars, fishing equipment (rods in protective cases), insect repellent and a fanny pack for hiking. Do not bring radios (iPod types are OK) or firearms.

Fishing

Fishing on the Middle Fork is outstanding. You'll need an Idaho fishing licence. You can get one in Stanley or by calling Idaho Sports Licensing, 1-800-554-8685. Our favorite tackle shop is McCoy's in Stanley and they can put together a selection of flies for you. Their phone number is 1-208-774-3377. Accommodations After Your River Trip

After lunch on the last day of the trip, our bus shuttles everyone to the town of Salmon. If there are guests who want to return to Stanley, we provide a shuttle from Salmon. We usually arrive in Salmon around 4:00 p.m. and two hours later in Stanley. Some guests enjoy spending the night in Salmon before flying to Boise the next morning. For lodging in Salmon, we recommend the Stagecoach Inn. Their reservations number is (208) 756-4251. If you are returning to Stanley, we recommend our meeting place, the Mountain Village Lodge.

Travel Arrangements at the End of Your Trip

Guests are responsible for flight arrangements from Salmon and should make reservations well in advance. The phone number for Salmon Air Taxi is 1-800-448-3413. Our bus usually arrives at the Salmon airport by 4 pm on the afternoon of our take-out.

Weather

Summer weather is usually ideal on the Middle Fork but mountain rain showers are common. Typical daytime temperatures are in the low 80s, cooling to the mid-50s in the evening. Early June dates are cooler. Make sure to bring good quality rain gear and a warm, fleece type jacket. Here is a link for the current weather in Stanley.

On the morning that your trip launches, we provide bus transportation to the put-in. Typically we leave Stanley at 8 am and arrive at the launch site, Boundary Creek at 9:45 am.
