About Salmon, Idaho

The small village of Salmon, Idaho, population about 3,000 at an elevation of 3900, is steeped in fascinating western history. It is the birthplace of Sacajawea and close to where Lewis & Clark crossed the continental divide in 1805 as they sought a route to the Pacific. In his book Undaunted Courage, author Steven Ambrose describes nearby places that dominate views from town, as "the closest we can come today to seeing a site as Lewis & Clark saw it in 1805." The town and its namesake river offer a rare glimpse to American history un-obscured by modern-day development. To learn more about Salmon and the lifestyles of the town, take a look at the Salmon Valley Video, produced by the Chamber of Commerce.
